Touring the heart of Portugal

As a holiday destination the heart of Portugal is still relatively unknown, but has been mentioned more and more as the ideal vacation destination in Europe.

Why Portugal?

Portugal is a country with beautiful landscapes and unspoiled nature, with a rich history and culture and authentic cities. With delicious food for relatively little money, and most of all helpful and friendly people. It’s one of the safest countries in Europe, with the sweetest people! We have joined forces to organize a wonderful week: “A week to enjoy”.

And who are we?

May I introduce: Jóse van der Zwan, a dutch lady, owner of the B&B Casa Traca close to Arganil, in the east of the country. She and her husband moved there not to long ago and they have four beautiful rooms for hire. Each room has it’s own theme.

Ellen Lanser – that’s me – I’ve lived here since 2000, in the Termas-da-Azenha, an old spa, with six holiday homes and four rooms. Especially the extras are fun to do: mosaic workshops, massages and cooking for my guests.

What are you going to do?

During this week you can go for a walk with a guide in the Serra do Acor, the hawk region. The name says it all: it’s a bird spotters paradise. You go to the top of the hill where you can visit the chapel. You walk back through the middle-ages: a couple of schist villages with a look of eternity about them.

Next stop: Termas-da-Azenha. In this old spa resort you can spot a lot of birds as well, like storks, falcons, herons and – if you’re lucky – flamingos. There’s a lot of creativity going around here. You can discover your own during a relaxed mosaic workshop with your hostess Ellen.

Most of the time we do this on the patio close to the swimming pool – if you’re done you can go & dive in or read a book in a quiet corner. You’ll take a beautiful remembrance back home, like a mirror, a bowl, a “painting” or a box.

In the Termas you can eat, drink, play, go to the beach or go and explore the area. There is a lot to do and experience.

The tour will be completed with a stay in Porto, at the hotel Aeroporto. That means there’s no need to stress, since your right next to the airport. Vueling, Easyjet and Ryanair fly to Porto for reasonable prices.

A day in Porto is certainly worth your while! The city centre is  World Heritage, and for a good reason. The famous port cellars next to the river are a good place to get a souvenir for the people at home.
