Water arrangement

Sunshine and water, the recipe for a successful holiday.
Summer in Portugal comes with sunshine-guarantee,
and here in the Termas da Azenha the water is so close:
as the soft pure curing mineralwater running in the old bathhouse; as the refreshing and roaring saltly salubrity of the waves of the Atlantic.

The Termas da Azenha is the place you stay, where you have your apartment or hotelroom; the sea will be your second best place to be. Stay in the Termas da Azenha, and enjoy what the water around has to offer you:

* sailing on the ocean on an elegant sailingvessel
* visiting the Aquapark “Teimoso” with several baths and slides
* making long walks or laze the day away on the diverse beaches
* taking long relaxing bathes, that sooth your skin, in the Termas
* diving or learning how to dive in Figueira da Foz
* surfing or learning how to Surf on the beach Cabadelos (near Figueira da Foz)
* Sailing on the ocean on an elegant sailing vessel

Sailing

This beautiful sailing vessel is a 60 feet long Norwegian double ender, built in Rosendal in Hardangerfjord, Norway in 1934. As the strech of sea near Norway is very rough and weather conditions harsh, the design of the boat is a modification of a "Colin Archer", which was the kind of boat used for as rescue boats of that time.

The early model was exclusively a sailing vessel, but later they got engines in addition. The hull is characterized by a very deep full keel and a wide shape giving good stability and large deck space.

Portuguese João Henrique (mate) and his Norwegian wife Randi (biologist) bought the boat from a diving company in 1989 and have been rebuilding it since then. First 14 years in Norway and now in Figueira, Portugal. They have all the necessary modern navigational equipment, like GPS, radar, VHF, Navtex, etc. Being in the boat gives you a feeling of old times and a chance to learn about sailing in the old fashioned way as well as gives you a calm, peaceful and pleasant experience between dolphins and gannets in Portugal´s pretty seascape.

You go for a daytrip when the tide is right, leaving the harbour in Figueira da Foz. You can go with a group (8 - 20), or just take your husband on a romantic trip on the ocean! Ask for the conditions at the Termas da Azenha info@termas-da-azenha.com.

Beaches

You probably do not need much explanation about this part of your holiday.

The observation that there are a lot of beaches, where you can be almost alone, even in July and August, should be enough to attract the attention of the peace-seekers amongst you.
But you can also find the other extreme : beaches with a lot of people and cheerful movement!

Taking baths

The pure mineralwater in Azenha is very good for your skin. Since ages, Portuguese people are coming here to cure their skinproblems, taking their whole family with them. Not only the water is crystalclear and curing ; the air also is very soothing and pure. If you stay with us in an apartment or hotelroom, you can enjoy the water coming from the tap, but you can go to the old bathhouse to take an oldfashioned bath. The bathhouse has been partially recuparated, and will be completely restaured in 2008.

Diving

You will take your first jump, o baptismo, like the Portuguese say, in a swimmingpool in Figueira da Foz. Figueira is a charming little city next to the coast, and very close to your Residence : the Termas da Azenha. You can choose for a day, meaning : one hour theory and explanation about the equipment, 2 hours diving and practising in the pool, or you can do a whole week.  The program for a (5 days) is: Every day from 10:00 – 13:00 theory and 16:00 – 19:00 practising in the pool or ocean. You'll be at least two days at sea, at Figueira, Peniche or Sessimbra. Transport is included. The place to dive depends on the tide, the waves and wheather conditions. The use of equipment is included. You'll have to arrange your own lunch but there are everywhere nice little restaurants.

The price of for one day diving is € 25,- p.p. The price of a week is € 375,- p.p., with a discount of € 25,- if you take a group of at least 4 people. The price of the diving course is not included in the price of your stay in the Termas da Azenha – please look under “Accommodation” to see, what kind of accommodation you would like, which can vary from a hotelroom with breakfast and dinner, or an apartment and self-catering.

Surfing

Praia de Quiaios
Driving down to Quiaios passing between lush green trees the winding road leads you out to long streches of beautiful almost people-free beaches;
with the best time to go in the morning while the predominant cross shore wind is still sleeping and the sea is almost garanteed empty. The waves can be really nice and not to heavy, but they still have a smooth shape and yet can be fast!

Praia de Buarcos
Situated opposite lidl's supermarket just north of the city Figueira is 'one of europes longest waves', it peels right and needs a big south west ground swell to really work well, and again is best in the morning when the wind is on a slightly off-shore breeze, works best at mid tide, amazing when it's working well!

Praia de Cabadelo
Just south of the river Mondego is probably the most favourite spot for the local surfers, Cabadelo is next to a long concrete jetty and can be a very fast and hollow wave when conditions are good, also best at mid tide!

Praia de Gala
Just south of Cabadelo there are some more easier waves to surf, which are situated between stone groines, these can be fun waves and are less crowded than Cabadelo.
